Session Type: Symposium
Teachers are too often excluded from policy decision-making that impacts their schools, classrooms, and, ultimately, students. Seeking a place in education policy often requires them to leave the classroom and take roles in administration, union leadership, or government. In this symposium, six teacher leaders from five states share how they used research to effectively impact education policy and change this paradigm about the role of teachers. These teachers as researchers will discuss what they learned; what the outcomes of their work in policy using research were; and the overall strengths and limitations of using teacher-led research in education policy. Participants will discuss with these teachers various models and strategies for encouraging more teachers to use research to impact education policy.
