34.079 - Interactive Stitch Sampler of Equitable Learning and Teaching With E-Textiles in K–12 Education

Sat, April 6, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Room 801A

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

We examine opportunities and challenges with integrating crafting, engineering, and computing through electronic textiles—wearable applications, soft toys, and accessories—which connect sewable components such as actuators and microcontrollers using conductive thread. Learning with electronic textiles uses hi- and lo-tech materials in historically gendered domains of crafting, engineering, and programming. The posters will address in which ways electronic textiles have helped broaden access, representation, and participation through various learning activities, teaching approaches and strategies for putting these maker activities into classrooms, and the depth of student learning outcomes in fields relevant to K-12 education.
