Session Type: Symposium
This session explores levers by which teacher educators can address teacher candidates’ (TC) deficit frames when serving racially marginalized students; and cultivate spaces that provide resources to enact an asset-based approach that celebrates, rather than demonizes, the rich cultural histories of the children they will teach. The papers consider each of the following levers: theoretical frames that illuminate the assets and humanity of racially minoritized students; simulations and clinical field experiences that engage TCs as they learn from and with families of color, rather than just about them; dialogic practices that support TCs in contending with race, inequality, and confronting their privilege; and identification and development of strategies that teachers of color have successfully employed within communities of color.
