Session Type: Symposium
This session derives from an interdisciplinary research project involving sixteen scholars and practitioners. We are integrating the critical resources of philosophy with research that illuminates culturally sensitive educational practices. The first co-presentation, by a philosopher of education collaborating with a colleague in English Education, examines the concept of the teacher as a “handler” of memories. The second co-presentation features two scholars in elementary education who draw on literacy research and philosophy of education. They criticize dominant conceptions of educational improvement by re-thinking conceptions of children and childhood. The third co-presentation, by two philosophers of education, addresses how teacher educators can help predominantly white populations of candidates make the ethical turn toward recognizing the significance of racialized identity in teaching.
