Session Summary

21.051 - Mathematics Coaching for Sense-Making: Shifting the Lens to Teachers in the Coaching Relationship

Fri, April 5, 4:20 to 6:20pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 206C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Recent coaching research has focused on identifying productive activities in which coaches can engage teachers to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics. However, there is a lack of research describing how teachers make sense of their learning opportunities while engaged in these coaching activities. This symposium shifts the lens on coaching to teachers as it brings together six groups of education scholars who will describe teacher sensemaking during individual and group coaching activities. Specifically, the panelists will explore (1) district and school contexts, as well as (2) coach-teacher interactions that facilitate or hinder teacher sensemaking. Implications for practitioners, such as coaches and district administrators, as well as researchers will be discussed.
