Abstract

This symposium brings together leading scholars in the field of calibration to examine the accuracy of students’ self-evaluations when they judge their performance on ambiguous tasks and in complex contexts. Papers in this symposium examine students’ calibration both in the classroom, using guidelines during group-work, and online, while using an educational technology tool, and in relation to tasks involving writing and creative problem solving. Across tasks and contexts, presenters consider (a) factors contributing to calibration accuracy, (b) relations between calibration and other individual difference factors, known to matter for learning, and (c) avenues for developing calibration in students, from elementary school to university. The symposium concludes with a discussion by an expert in the assessment and development of calibration.
