Abstract

Pre-service programs increasingly feature opportunities to approximate classroom practice, including the use of virtual reality simulations of K-12 classroom scenarios. These simulations support rather than replace “real” clinical experiences in K-12 classrooms, while allowing teacher educators to observe candidates in ways that are otherwise difficult to replicate in a university classroom. Despite the intuitive appeal of simulations, little empirical research has examined how they support and assess candidate development. This session will highlight four approaches to supporting high-quality teaching with simulations. The studies describe how teacher education programs use simulations to promote and measure the development of instructional practice. Presenters will highlight the goals and content of the simulation and the theory for using simulation to bolster candidate learning.
