43.063 - Crossing the Chalk Line: Perspectives on Sports Culture and K–12 Education

Abstract

Sports are ubiquitous in contemporary society, with multiple implications for those serving in K-12 schools. Teachers, coaches, and school leaders can leverage sports knowledge—insights from an ever evolving web of cultural experiences—to benefit students if they proceed thoughtfully, with critical awareness of the issues and their assumptions of sports and athletes. In the interest of promoting a multifaceted engagement with sports culture and education, this symposium presents a diverse collection of papers from authors who are all former athletes turned educators. The panel’s five papers employ a range of frameworks to consider productive ways of serving student-athletes and to promote informed conversations about sports participation as it affects the work of K-12 educators.
