Wikwemikong Board of Education’s (https://wbe-education.ca/) on-reserve school system located on Manitoulin Island, some 600 kilometers north of this conference site. Manitoulin has been habited for over 9,000 years and is unceded territory. Wikwemikong has over 7,000 Anishinabek members with approximately 3, 000 living in Wikwemikong itself. This two-hour virtual interactive field trip will allow you to visit the schools and classrooms, through videos while observing students learning combining both Ontario curriculum expectations with Anishinabe cultural responsive experiential teachings. In 2006, Wikwemikong formally implemented a community-based Anishnaabemowin Language Strategy embedding language, culture and history. Additionally, you will have an opportunity to meet face-to-face with and be guided by Knowledge Keepers, Elders, and system leaders sharing strategies and resources.
