Session Summary

63.087-4 - Revisiting the Contradictory College: 25 Years Later

Mon, April 8, 10:25 to 11:55am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This symposium brings together leading higher education scholars on the 25th anniversary of the publication of Kevin Dougherty’s (1994) landmark book, The Contradictory College to discuss its historical impact and significance to contemporary community college research and practice. The presenters will present original research and their analyses of literature to address the practical implications of the contradictory mission of community colleges (transfer education and occupational education) and the impact of Dougherty’s formulation of state relative autonomy theory. Opportunities for small group discussion will provide a forum for broader dialogue on these issues.
