Session Type: Symposium
The aim of this session is to explore how socio-cultural and contextual factors impact motivation and learning using large-scale international datasets. Different socio-cultural factors including economic structures, cultural values, ethnicity, and implicit attitudes are explored. The proposed symposium extends existing discussions on culture and motivation in three ways. First, by using international datasets it moves beyond previous studies which have centered on the experiences of different ethnic groups within the US. Second, it examines how culture and context modify the relations among key constructs and extends previous research which has mostly focused on the documentation of mean-level differences. Third, it advances both theory and methodology through the use of substantive-methodological synergies.
