79.011 - Gender and Post-Truth Politics in Education: Shifting Masculinities

Abstract

Post-truth politics have been defined as a period where media sensationalism and a focus on gaining clicks and views in the attention economy has led to a rise ‘fake news’ and global political turns to the right. Increasing use of digital technologies has enabled a virulent spread of alt-right discourses and networked ‘disinformation’. Responding to this context and the wider AERA theme on the role of research evidence in a post-truth era, this session explores how gender plays out in these debates examining the relationship between post-truth politics and toxic, aggrieved masculinities. Papers show a complex and multifaceted terrain of contemporary masculinities in diverse educational environments across international contexts.
