45.064 - Ethical and Political Engagements With Emergent Curriculum in Early Childhood Education

Abstract

Drawing on their experiences working as pedagogistas in Canada and the United States of America, the presenting researchers invite participants to critically and generatively reimagine emergent curriculum. Specifically, this workshop engages with the concept of ‘emergence’ as that which requires us to think and do beyond simply following the lead of children. The workshop focuses on particular interruptive orientations that respond to and cultivate conditions for emergence in early childhood education. These orientations work to (a) disrupt the managerial concerns of emergence in everyday practice, (b) trouble the co-optation of emergence by neoliberal and human-centred consumptive practice, and (c) unsettle emergence in conversation with settler colonialism and anti-blackness.
