Session Type: Symposium
This session presents both conceptual and empirical studies designed to expand our understanding of how social cohesion and preparation for civic participation can be developed in schools, including outside the national contexts in which much of the theory in these fields has been developed. The four papers address the complementary nature of justice and harmony in preparing students for civic deliberation; the usefulness of Confucian concepts of compassion and benevolence in laying the foundation for civic deliberation; a study of a harmony-oriented alternative to Western versions of multiculturalism in Taiwanese schools; and a study of Mexican, Bangladeshi and Canadian teachers’ prioritization of social cohesion values over social-structural and political dimensions of diversity conflicts.
