Abstract
Helping professionals experience occupational stress at higher levels than other professionals. The cross cultural generalizability of popular theories of occupational stress and coping has been unclear. Findings will be reported from different methodological perspectives across a diverse set of cultural contexts: China, Germany, Mexico, Singapore, and the United States. The session will examine the occupational experiences of teachers and social workers in various cultures, and contrast those aspects of occupational stress, coping, and resilience that are universal with those that are culturally specific. Therefore, this session has the potential to advance theoretical understandings of processes that separate helping professionals who thrive in the face of occupational stressors from those who succumb to burnout and an early exit from the field.
