45.081 - Transforming Sport in Education: International Perspectives on LGBTQ Inclusion

Abstract

There is a lack of scholarship investigating LGBTQ issues in educationally-based sporting milieus (e.g. school sport, leisure sport, physical education, etc.). Thus far, sport has been painted as a ‘negative culture’ for LGTBQ youth. Instead of theorizing sport as repressive for queer youth, the researchers in this session had the ambition of exploring ways to transform sport into an inclusive space for queer youth. In so doing, the researchers produced an assemblage of studies from across the world that explored experiences of LGBTQ youth, policies of sport, and ways to augment LGBTQ participation in sport through the education of teachers and coaches. The authors conclude their presentations by providing suggestions to make sport LGBTQ inclusive.
