Session Summary

31.041 - Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies: Intergenerational Sustenance and Solidarities From Turtle Island to //Hui !Gaeb

Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 712

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In this session, we present engagements with culturally sustaining pedagogies (Paris 2012; Paris & Alim, 2017) rooted in intergenerational sustenance and solidarities from Turtle Island to //Hui !Gaeb (“the place where the clouds gather,” currently most commonly referred to as Cape Town, South Africa). Our session examines four separate, but interconnected enactments of culturally sustaining pedagogies (CSP) across Native and Black communities. Given the ways nation-state education is structured by the ongoing settler colonial legacies of land theft, genocide, and enslavement, our collective work on CSP seeks to create strategic alliances and coalitions between Black education and Indigenous education that sustains our youth and communities.
