Abstract

This session explores the complexities of doing research on youth’s lives within school settings. We examine how traditional researcher-participant dynamics are challenged by the relationships we develop with youth through and for research, and how these relationships, in turn, complicate the process and outcomes of the research we produce.The authors in this panel draw on theories of care, loved-based approaches to qualitative data, and culturally relevant pedagogy. These papers highlight the value and necessity of building deep and trusting relationships with research participants – which is not only important for the data gathered, but for reciprocity and conducting responsible research with youth. This session contributes to qualitative research by expanding the understanding of “participant” in participant observation with youth.
