77.030 - French as a Second Language Programs in Canada: Perception, Assessment, and Academic Outcomes

Abstract
The objective of the symposium is to assess key stakeholders’ perception and academic outcomes of French as a second language (FSL) programs in Canada. There are three different types of FSL programs, French immersion, extended French and core French, in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), Canada’s largest school board. The five papers in this symposium make several novel contributions. First, several studies focus on ELLs, a little-known population in FSL programs. A second innovation is the use of large-scale, systemic data. Third, the symposium examines the efficacy of the FSL programs from the perspectives of multiple key stakeholders. Finally, our studies adopt both quantitative and mixed-method designs to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the FSL programs.
