77.045 - Changing Policies Changes Practices: Narratives of Early Childhood Education in Contemporary China

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 600 Level, Room 601A

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Early childhood education (ECE) has become a national priority in China since 2010, when the State Council (2010) set the ambitious goal that 85% of the 100 million young children should attend preschools by 2020. This aggressive policy has posed tremendous challenges to Chinese policymakers, principals, teachers, young children and their parents. All these stakeholders were not really prepared for the radical changes thus were suffering in the past years. The session will be the first collection of the latest empirical studies on the post-2010 development of ECE in contemporary China. The findings and implications will provide valuable experience and lessons for other countries that are also striving for accessible, affordable and accountable ECE.
