61.033 - Metaphors of Learning in the Professions: Psychologists, Teachers, Policy Makers, and Artists Compared

Abstract

This session compares metaphors that psychologists, teachers and policymakers “live by” in their everyday work. It includes four papers, each from a distinct setting. The first paper examines use of metaphor in clinical psychological practice with children in the US. The second paper examines metaphors that pre-service teachers in Israel use when reporting on their teaching experience. The third paper challenges, on theoretical grounds, the metaphors underlying each of the preceding papers, criticizing education’s reliance on psychological metaphors, and proposing an alternative metaphor of learning as performance. The fourth paper examines the metaphors of identity that policy makers in the US and Israel use to discuss educational interventions designed to strengthen the Jewish identities of young Jews.
