Session Type: Symposium
Scholars in this symposium address evolving discourses, representations, and understandings of HIV/AIDS in the 21st century on a global scale. Emerging from specific national contexts – Iceland, Finland, South Africa, and the United States – the papers address a range of issues including HIV criminalization, the role of the arts in historicizing HIV/AIDS, evolving approaches to health education and the politics of childhood. Across these issues, the scholars illustrate both shared challenges and differences encountered within different national histories, politics, and educational dynamics. While HIV/AIDS has become less visible within education beyond prevention, this symposium seeks to reimagine and critically address HIV/AIDS in new and complex ways for our current contexts.
