64.072 - Connecting Higher Education Classrooms to Learners' Lived Experiences and Community Ways of Knowing

Abstract

This symposium brings together four programs of research that have applied a learning sciences lens to research in higher education. The papers share a focus on recruiting students’ prior knowledge, experiences, and identities in service of their ongoing learning. Postsecondary classrooms are places where important learning processes take place, including learners’ socialization to disciplinary ways of knowing; development of adults’ perspectives on self-identification and sense of personhood; and conceptualizing one’s relationships with various communities, both inside and outside the institution of higher learning. Yet, Learning Scientists have not typically studied learning in these settings. We aim to explore how learning scientists can collaborate with higher education scholars in order to understand and improve teaching and learning in postsecondary education.
