51.023 - Rethinking the Intellectual for the 21st Century

Abstract

In times of political division, rising inequality, and questionable leadership, the role of the intellectual needs to be understood and well established. In this panel, presenters will discuss intellectualism and its relation to the twenty-first century academy, shifting realms of the public, and curriculum. In five distinct papers, the authors of this panel will (a) examine the productive effects of exile, (b) consider intellectualism in light of posthuman theories of affect, (c) explore tensions between relationality, sexuality and public intellectualism, (d) take up the telling of truth in an “after” truth moment, and (e) explore intellectual pathways in a post-ironic world. This panel will add to and reignite discussions of the intellectual under the big tent of curriculum studies.
