Abstract

Multilingual students thrive in schools that provide supportive conditions for acquiring English while preserving and growing the cultural and linguistic knowledge they bring to school. They need a humanizing pedagogy where educators honor their lives, languages, and experiences and attend to their well-being (Salazar, 2013). In this session, presenters identify schools that offer many elements of humanizing pedagogy to multilingual students in Texas, New York, California, and Arizona. Presenters will describe the people, policies, practices, and structures that allow these schools to expand students’ learning opportunities. Following these presentations, the discussant will summarize the elements that characterize these schools and invite participants to explore the application of a humanizing pedagogy for all schools.
