Abstract

In this symposium, we examine the challenges and possibilities of market-oriented reforms on the preparation of teachers in two countries where these reforms are very advanced and where societies are increasingly witnessing anti-science movements, bigotry, nativism, and xenophobia: England and the U.S. We focus on the preparation of future secondary teachers to examine the reach and possibility of disciplinary and education knowledge as powerful tools that may help counter these localized (horizontal) discourses. We note that in some cases reforms have served to open space for innovation while some ‘deskill’ future teachers by weakening the disciplinary and educational knowledge base needed for teaching.
