45.065 - Exploring the Complexities in Global Citizenship Education: Hard Spaces, Methodologies, and Ethics

Abstract

In this session, affiliated with a UNESCO Chair project on the themes of the session, the authors explore Global Citizenship Education (GCE) work in hard spaces in the Global South from Southern, postfoundational, “alternative,” and cross-trajectory perspectives. The session combines theoretical and qualitative GCE research/analysis, including grounded theory, discourse analysis, interviews, and ethnography in work on/based in China, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Kenya, Rwanda, and the US.

The project explores how, while GCE is high priority in leading educational spaces such as UNESCO, there is a gap in GCE work that confronts, responds to, and/or resonates with the realities of research in “hard spaces.” Thus, new ways of thinking about the liminalities of GCE in these contexts is essential.
