Session Summary

31.025 - Beyond In/Visibilities: Working With and Through Visual Methodologies

Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Second Floor, Civic Ballroom North

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session is a conversation between participatory action researchers and artists, discussing critical approaches to using visual images in our work. Through various fields and frameworks - including visual studies, critical place inquiry, haunting, and critical race studies - we offer a critique of image-making and visual methodologies that re/produce violent regimes of representation. Rather than doing away with visual materials altogether, we rework visual methodologies to explore truth-making in research and intervene on dominant forms of representation. Each presenter shares their strategies for using the visual as theory, process, and evidence, from the perspectives of art and participatory research.
