Session Summary

21.040 - Children's Common Worlds in Times of Climate Change and "Post-Truths"

Fri, April 5, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Room 801A

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

Much educational research on climate change has embraced an adult-instated viewpoint: children learn about climate change from what adults think children should learn. Furthermore, much scholarship in environmental education addresses climate challenges using approaches developed for the challenges of the 20th century (Taylor, 2013). This session intends to address these concerns by researching children’s creative responses to climate issues. Posters engage with the following questions: How do young children engage creatively to address climate change related impacts on food, water, energy, land, trees, and weather within their own local contexts? How do children located in diverse geographic and socio-economic contexts respond differently to climate change?
