47.061 - Geographic School Choice Research Across the Local-Global Scale

Abstract

This multimodal panel leverages school choice research in four distinct geographic scales: national, state, district, and community. School choice policies are expanding globally, but at the same time, have very local effects. Education research often does not emphasize the geographic concepts of space and scale (Gulson & Symes, 2007), but we collectively argue that understanding school choice policy and its effects across the local-global scale (Pratt & Rosner, 2006) provides an otherwise missed comprehensive understanding. Each paper addresses school choice at different scales, which we hope will lead to a discussion about both the commonalities that exist across the studies, as well as the importance of geography, scope, and scale in this work.
