Abstract

This symposium explores how manifestations of systemic racism impact the well-being and educational experiences of Black students. Guided by a critical race theory framework, this symposium specifically attends to the influence of racism on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) culture in education and the implications of racism on the social-psychological well-being of Black students. Themes such as the link between racism and the conceptualization of and teaching STEM, implications of said link on Black students’ STEM learning and engagement, and the overall impact of racism on Black students’ identity and well-being will be examined in the individual presentations. Additionally, each presentation will introduce strategies and tools practitioners and scholars can employ to combat racism in their research and practice.
