Session Summary

47.039 - Promoting Disability Equity Across Health Professions Education: Considering U.S. and Canadian Students' Lived Experiences

Sun, April 7, 11:50am to 1:20pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 202B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Following a 2018 report from AAMC on disability in medical education (Meeks & Jain), this panel focuses on disability equity across health and human service (HHS) professional education. In so doing, we employ multiple methods and theoretical frameworks to a) map the terrain for Canadian disabled medical students with respect to policy and lived experiences, b) understand the nuance of disabled student-supervisor relationships, c) identify limitations of current disability inclusion practices in U.S. medical education, and d) consider the value disabled HHS professionals can bring to their practice given their disability epistemologies. Papers increase understanding of the mechanics of inequity for disabled HHS students in U.S. and Canadian contexts, while offering mechanisms to push the needle towards genuine educational inclusion.
