Abstract

The papers in this symposium provide lessons on school climate, culture, and discipline drawing from the largest school district in the country, New York City. First, a comprehensive quantitative study examines the neighborhood-, school-, and student-level factors that contribute to student disciplinary and academic outcomes. Second, in-depth case studies in five NYC schools provide a qualitative examination of the lessons of restorative justice. Third, preliminary data and findings are shared from one of the first randomized controlled trials examining restorative justice in schools. And last, a current practitioner overseeing restorative justice in five schools discusses the ways in which research and practice intersect to build community and change school culture.
