Abstract

Educational research on making and engineering often emphasizes the design of activities, individual learning trajectories, and more recently the role of facilitation. However, less explicit attention has been paid to the deep intersections between social and intellectual relations within the context of making/engineering, to explicit forms of pedagogy and their intentionality, to children as cultural and political actors, and ultimately to what educational dignity and justice look and feel like in these spaces. Building on recent scholarship that is working to center these issues, this symposium addresses this need through micro-ethnographic and interactional accounts of expansive pedagogy, learning and self-determination within a range of making/engineering environments, all of which serve children and youth from non-dominant communities.
