43.059 - The Philosophy of Listening in Intercultural Perspective

Abstract

Abstract
Philosophers of education in Europe and North America have closely attended to listening in education. In this decade alone, studies have been published on the treatment of listening in Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau, Dewey, and other classical Western philosophers. Original philosophical accounts of listening in teaching and learning have also appeared. In the emerging context of global philosophical exchange, it is now timely to investigate the ideas of classical Eastern philosophers such as Laozi, Confucius and Zhuangzi, and dialogue with our Eastern philosophical contemporaries about listening in education. The session features dialogues among contemporary American and Chinese philosophers of education, and relates insights offered by Chinese philosophers to recent Western scholarship on listening in education.
