Session Type: Symposium
While classrooms across the world are becoming more multilingual and multicultural, monolingualism, a form of linguicism that marginalises various groups of people who do not speak the dominant language, remains entrenched as the dominant approach in teacher education. It is imperative to prepare competent and caring teachers who are able to develop meaningful and heterogeneous contexts of learning for language minoritized students. This symposium brings together five different groups of researchers in teacher education to critically examine how introducing, integrating, and modeling translanguaging, the valuing and leveraging of students’ entire linguistic repertoires in learning contexts, can enhance preservice teacher knowledge and understanding of multilingualism, and improve their quality of teaching to better serve culturally, linguistically diverse learners in various settings.
