Abstract

In this session, we draw attention to the city of Indianapolis and the ways in which neoliberal philosophies have shaped public discourses about urban education and its relationship to the economic, political, and spatial changes. Like many other urban cities, Indianapolis has become a ripe context for neoliberal policies that give way to urban displacement (Mullins & White, 2010), racial containment, and the illusion of school choice through vouchers and public charter schools (Stein, 2015). In this “Post-Truth” era, analysis of public discourse is vital to understanding how educational ideas are understood and marketed as common sense (Ferretti & Rossi, 2013; Saraisky, 2015; Woodly, 2015).
