Abstract

Writing on the lived spatial and bodily experience of whiteness, Sara Ahmed (2007) teases apart the dynamics of invisibility and hypervisibility that shape white institutional spaces. She argues that “Spaces are orientated ‘around’ whiteness, insofar as whiteness is not seen.” One of the conditions of white space then, is an uneven, positionally situated and ever-shifting inconspicuousness. In this symposium, the authors engage practices of collage, poetry, body work, and sound to turn towards educational whiteness. Working with the personal cartographies of particular institutions and a range of mapping practices, we trace the habits of institutional whiteness and the ways that our and other bodies-- stances/ shapes/ postures--inhabit and unsettle them.
