Session Summary

77.026 - Toward Just Forms of Language and Literacy Learning Re-Mediating Pedagogies of Reading and Writing

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 706

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium brings together critical scholars and researchers of learning invested in the development of just forms of language and literacy education. Though heterogeneous, our visions of educational justice share a commitment to enacting the conditions through which non-dominant children, young people and communities can lead thriving and self-determined lives, free of the assimilative demands of white supremacy, economic exploitation, patriarchy, heteronormativity and colonial domination. Understanding the ways these systems directly shape normative forms of literacy instruction, we draw on ethnographic and interactional methods to closely analyze alternative pedagogical forms, their complexities, and the locally defined and ecologically meaningful forms of learning that emerge therein.
