Abstract

Digitally-mediated semiotic activity has been central to the ‘post-truth’ era, increasing the facility and speed with which narratives can travel across networks. Digital literacies are needed to investigate connections with or departures from empirical knowledge, as new literacies can intensify or shift de/humanization. This panel offers richer understandings of ‘digital literacies’ by bringing together scholars investigating ways to democratize evidence, and the identification of agency in this ‘post-truth’ political moment. Specifically, this panel highlights research on ideologies that shape electronically-mediated semiotic activity, tools for inquiry that deepen understandings of ‘digital’ as a mediator of knowledge, and humanizing literacies of participatory cultures through digital media.
