61.015 - Embracing and Modeling the Complex Dynamics of Motivation and Engagement: Contextual, Temporal, Dynamic, and Systematic

Abstract
This non-traditional session is designed to familiarize the audience with a variety of complexity-aligned data collection and analytical approaches relevant to research questions about motivation and engagement. Each presentation will feature a project that embraced the complexity of the motivational or engagement phenomenon under study, employed data collection that corresponded with the complexity assumptions, and applied analytical approaches that can accommodate research questions that concern such complexity. Twelve researchers will serve as panelists, poster presenters, and small group facilitators. A theoretical and methodological primer opens the session. Poster session and a participatory panel+audience discussion follow. In the final phase, presenters and audience members will cluster and facilitate discussions of conceptual and methodological challenges and opportunities and establish nascent research communities.
