Session Type: Structured Poster Session
Cultural institutions are playing an increasingly influential role in the educational landscape, especially in relationship to the professional development of teachers. In the last two decades, science museums have quietly established themselves as rich sites for teachers to learn about teaching science, providing extensive professional development programs as well as programs of teacher certification and preparation. However, research has not fully examined the nature of the contributions that a museum setting provides for teachers’ learning. Building on those growing efforts to support teacher learning, this session examines specifically what museums offer that other teacher education program contexts may not? We share compelling illustrations from multiple sites, representing natural history/collections based museums as well as interactive science spaces.
