35.028 - Failure in the Learning Process: How Learners Experience and Overcome Obstacles Through Resources and Supports

Sat, April 6, 4:10 to 6:10pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Sheraton Hall E

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

Rising popular interest in the idea that failure supports learning and innovation has created urgency for in-depth, critical reflections on the topic from scholars, especially from perspectives rooted in the discourse and materials of learning environments. This session gathers diverse contributions from researchers looking at failure in learning, whether focusing on students’ actual experiences of failure, or how they overcome these moments through use of learning resources and supports. We have two goals for the symposium: first, presenting the nuanced dimensions by which to operationalize failure including size, terminability, aim, and consequence, and second, compiling an actionable list of practical classroom supports for productive failure, which can lay the foundation for future research in this area.
