Abstract

Democratic ideals like equity and justice can, and arguably should, be learned and practiced in classrooms. Thus, it is worth considering how preservice teachers learn to create classrooms where these ideals are embodied. In this alternative format session, data will be shared from an ongoing inquiry into how preservice teachers learn to language relationships in elementary literacy contexts. Undergirded by the beliefs that relationships and ideologies are languaged into being, the research project explores how preservice teachers analyze language within interactions during literacy events. Session attendees will be invited to examine data alongside the research team including audio/video recordings of preservice teachers in interaction with students, transcripts, and preservice teachers’ analysis of their own language-in-use.
