Session Type: Demonstration/Performance
Through a powerful Stichomythia performance, this session hopes to show how to effectively utilize auto-ethnographic writings to critically and investigate sociocultural questions in education. Performers will illustrate how experiences illuminating the intricacies of the many shades of whiteness (Jacobson, 2009) has led one African-American Muslim scholar and one Asian transracial immigrant adoptee scholar on a serendipitous crash course towards a sociocultural education in higher education whiteness. By highlighting how our K-12 educational experiences and childhood racial dynamics have played a significant role in the development of our double consciousness (Dubois & Edwards, 2007) we critique how our seemingly very disparate experiences have left us (un)prepared to navigate the inescapable truth of the complexities of whiteness in the academy.
