Abstract

Dualisms within educational research that emphasize the value of rationality over emotion, objectivity over interpretation, mind over body reflect analogous value hierarchies that pit human crises against planetary distress. In this session, we refuse these binaries insisting on the need to examine our emotional responses to the vital processes in the material world as a form of wisdom essential to eco-ethical being. We argue for educational relationships that lead to the development of empathy, humility, mutual recognition, care and voice as necessary responses to intersecting social, economic and ecological degradation besetting our communities.
