Session Summary

18.012 - Challenging Dominant Narratives of Sexual Violence Through Participatory Visual Methodologies

Fri, April 5, 2:25 to 3:55pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 201E

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Across many contexts, sexual violence and harassment is normalized, internalized, ignored and underreported (Hlavka, 2014; Watts & Zimmerman, 2002). For systems and policies to prevent and respond to sexual violence and its root causes, perspectives of girls and young women should be central to their development (Moletsane, Mitchell & Lewin, 2015). Participatory visual methodologies (Mitchell, DeLange & Moletsane, 2017) offer an effective approach for building evidence about lived experiences of sexual violence, while empowering participants to challenge dominant narratives of patriarchy, colonialism, racism and heterosexism that enable sexual violence in their communities. This symposium examines the use of participatory visual methodologies to provide empowering experiences for girls and young women through research, teaching and cross-cultural engagement.
