Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) matters to professions on many levels. Professionals have social status and better odds on continued employment. Social justice therefore requires equitable access to professional ranks. Once recruited, professionals from non-standard backgrounds face hurdles of inclusion within the profession. Lastly, society has a reasonable expectation that the professions paid to serve them reflect the full range of their social diversity. While acknowledged rhetorically for at least three decades, these truths have not been effectively acted on by professions nor society. This symposium examines the question in one illustrative profession, reviews a fault in the underlying change approach, presents a successful interventional program and considers the special situation of digitized education.
