79.045 - Examining Successes and Challenges From Five Different Science Teacher Professional Development Projects Around the Next Generation Science Standards

Tue, April 9, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 205B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Recent research highlights the learning challenges in-service science teachers face with the new science standards (Next Generation Science Standards, NGSS). Yet, little is known about how to best support teacher learning around NGSS aligned teaching. This session features five different professional development (PD) projects sharing their PD approaches as well as lessons learned about how to support in-service teachers to understand and enact teaching around the NGSS. We bring together these varied approaches to share what each project has learned from their work in order to reflect on and refine our own and others PD efforts. The session presenters will share quantitative and qualitative data collected from their NGSS PD projects, highlighting the successes and challenges in teacher learning.
