Abstract

The papers in this session offer theoretically creative and methodologically rigorous ways of approaching boundaries and borders in educational research. While considerable attention has been given to boundaries and borders in education (Akkerman & Bruining, 2016; Akkerman & Bakker, 2011; Garraway, 2010), this session draws on literature from Critical Theory, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, and Diaspora Studies amongst others, to forward consequential and equitable approaches to research that center critical perspectives on the conceptualization and perpetuation of boundaries in educational practice. The papers converge around confronting and challenging racial boundaries in pursuit of more just and anti-racist praxis while also exploring how such boundaries manifest in the sociopolitical and linguistic power hierarchies that imbue the larger contexts shaping schooling practices.
